MTX side effect? Options

I took my dose last night and I have the same feeling as last week. A kind of pressure and squeezing round my ribcage, as if my stomach is really full but also going round to the back. Anyone else felt like this? I also have the start of another bad head. Last week it turned into a vile migraine with nausea and vomiting within 24 hours of taking MTX at the increased dose of 8 tablets. My usual migraine relief didn't touch it but I think I left taking it till too late.


Hopefully I will only have one more dose as I saw the rheumy yesterday. She said it wasn't working and ordered more blood tests to see if leflunomide or cellcept would be more useful. She said she will get back to me in 2 weeks. I also had another steroid injection. She didn't mention resting afterwards, though I have seen recently that some are trying to rest up after their depos. Is this worth trying?

Sorry to be so full of questions. I have really appreciated the 'company' of the forum - I'm still off work and feeling a bit lonely Sad XX Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,

So sorry you are feeling down, hope things improve as the day goes on.

I'm going to take my fourth does of MTX tomorrow and apart from slight nausea and upset tummy no other side effects yet, but I'm sure others can give you advice.

Remember you are not alone, I'm off to work now for a couple of hours but I'll be thinking of you.

Hi Ailsa

I hope the depo works well for you. It is best to rest as much as you can after the injection, medics don't seem to tell you to do it, but from what I've learnt on here it does seem a good idea.

Hi Ailsa

Sorry to hear that you are unwell; it does sound as though your symptoms are due to a reaction to methotrexate. Slight nausea is common but not to the extent you describe! I think if it were me I might be inclined to contact rheumatology because it doesn't sound as though you should be taking another dose with those sort of side effects. It is a very toxic drug and can do nasty things to you so worth following up.

Depo injections require a minimum of 24 hours rest to allow the stuff to get into the system fully. They should really have explained this to you, the numpties!

sorry see you feeling so rough,side effect query you ask away anytime,id call your rheumy nurse today about how mtx making you feel.
the steriod yes they do tend foregt tell you to rest up,my gp did said 24 hours min but more u can the better gives it chance to wokr wel and gives joints rest to.

Sorry you feeling so rough - I was on mtx offf and on for 1 yr and I didn't come across
side effects like that I'm pleased to say. I would ring your RA nurse if I were you.

I had a depo injec 10 days ago and at mo feel good - so good luck for you. However,
I only learnt from Lyn and others that I should have rested .

Hi,

I was on MTX for three and a half years or so and I would definitely have your symptoms checked. One can definitely g=have those side effects with MTX. You may need the injection form or even to lower the dose but of course this is for the rheumy to decipher.

Funnily enough I did used to get this odd feeling under my breast bone rather alike to indigestion whilst iw a son MTX. I used to worry myself silly about it but my GP thought it was definitely acid reflux etc. I would take Gaviscon or a natural rmedy and it would cease for a while. Once I came off it it disappeared.

One must really rest (in bed ideally) after a steroid jab- whenever I haven't it hasn't lasted as long or been as potent.

I had EXACTLY these problems when In was on oral Mtx, felt really lousy after every dose, and had to cope with constant diarrhoea too, better when I changed to sub-cut jabs, but I eventually got changed to Leflunomide instead, have had very few side effects with this so maybe ske to lower the dose, or try the jabs or ask for a complete change? They give MTX as the gold standard but it can be a bit of a beast for some people. Hope you feel much better soon, especially when you take that 24 hrs rest we all should be told about!!! LOve Lxx
